This is especially true when it comes to siding installation. We are a preferred James Hardie Siding contractor which means we install one of the most durable, beautiful products in the industry. Good Guys believes in James Hardie siding because we believe it’s unsurpassed by any other siding product. It will protect your home for years.

But we also know that even the best products out there need care from the homeowner. Doing regular maintenance will help you get more out of your James Hardie siding. An important job you shouldn’t let go is cleaning your siding. Regular cleaning will increase your home’s curb appeal and strengthen your property’s value. So we want to give you a primer on cleaning James Hardie Siding.

Before You Get Started

There are several things you need to keep in mind before you get started. According to the James Hardie Siding website, it’s recommended that you clean your siding once or twice a year. It’s also a good idea for you to take a hose to wash off your siding every 6 to 12 months. You should avoid using a high pressure washer in favor of a low pressure hose and a soft medium-bristle brush to do the job.

Battling Dirt, Oil Mold and Mildew

The enemy you’ll encounter most frequently when cleaning your siding is of course, dirt. Dust and dirt can accumulate on your home as the result of heavy wind. James Hardie suggests that you use a soft cloth and a soft brush including All Paint poly brush, chip brush or horsehair bench brush. Avoid hard metal brushes and abrasive sponges, because they can damage your siding. Brush the surface of your siding to get rid of dirt and dust and then rinse it with water from a garden hose. If you’re using a soft cloth, wet it and clean it using a side to side motion in the direction of the plank. Rinse with clean water.

For those tough oil or grease stains, you’re going to use a soft cloth and a garden hose, but you’ll need more than water this time. Saturate the cloth with soapy water. Use liquid dishwashing soap. Then clean the siding while continuously rinsing your cloth. Make sure the soap doesn’t dry on the siding.

One thing you definitely don’t want on the side of your house is mold and mildew. Mildew looks like dirt, so be very careful when you’re inspecting the side of your home. If it is mildew, you need to get a mildew specific cleaner and carefully follow the instructions. Lightly scrub the affected area and use a garden hose to rinse it off.
