Gain a Better Understanding About James Hardie Siding
If you’re looking to put new exterior siding on your home, you want to make sure that you use a product that will be durable. That’s not always easy because it means your siding has to stand up to everything the elements can throw at you from temperatures, moisture, fire, wind, and insects. Your siding needs to be engineered to avoid all of these hazards.

At Good Guys Contracting, we are proud to be a preferred James Hardie Siding remodeler. We recommend installing James Hardie because we know that this siding is specifically engineered to resist what Mother Nature dishes out. We know that this involves a lot of know-how so we want to tell you what you should know about the science behind James Hardie Siding.
First, you need to know some of the basics. James Hardie Siding is a fiber cement product that’s made of four main ingredients. Silica sand is the base ingredient while wood pulp gives the siding board bending strength. This is helped by water which dissolves the wood pulp while at the same time hardening the Portland Cement that binds together the other ingredients. The result is a product that is rot resistant. Unlike wood siding, Hardie stands up to moisture.
Hardie Siding is Engineered For Your Climate
James Hardie Siding doesn’t install the same siding everywhere. That’s because they further engineer their siding to match climate conditions in different regions of the country. It’s called The HardieZone System and the engineering is based on eight individual climactic variables that have a long-term effect on siding. The engineers took those factors and created 10 distinct climactic zones. Long Island is in Zone 5 and the HZ5 product line is engineered for this zone.
HZ5 products are built to withstand ice, snow and freezing temperatures that are found here in the northeast. HZ5 has superior paint adhesion and moisture resistance and Hardie added a drip edge to provide improved water management. It resists damage from ice, snow and freezing temperatures.
For warmer weather climates, Hardie manufactures HZ10 products, which are designed to resist moisture damage and issues with cracking, splitting, rotting and swelling.
Because it’s fiber cement siding Hardie Boards will also help protect you from pest infestation. It’s not wood siding, so termites won’t feed on it and birds won’t peck at it either.
Another drawback of wood siding is that it’s more flammable and the wood feeds flames if the siding does catch fire. James Hardie Siding is safer. It’s been classified by various IAS-certified labs as non-combustible with a flame spread index of 0 and a smoke developed index of less than 5, making Hardie approved for fire resistant construction. Some insurance companies even give homeowners a discount on their premium if they have Hardie siding.
