What to Consider Before You Insulate
First, a little bit about insulation. Insulation keeps warm air in your home during the winter and cool air in your home during summer months. According to the Department of Energy, that’s because heat flows from warmer to cooler until there’s no difference in temperature. In winter, that means the warm air dissipates.
A big part of your insulation installation is often related to your attic. According to the Washington Post, you should evaluate the condition of your attic to make certain the rafters are not moldy or rotted and can support insulation. You also need to seal any cracks or holes in your attack that can allow warm air to escape.
Installing Insulation

The higher the R-value, the greater the resistance by the insulation. The R-value of a particular type of insulation will vary depending on where it’s installed. For example, the R-value of insulation installed in a ceiling is going to be different from the R-value of the same insulation installed in a wall.
The amount of insulation you’re going to need depends on the climate where your home is located. The Energy Department has created a map ranging from 1 to 8 with Zone 1 representing the warmest zones like South Florida, while Zone 8 is located in the coldest regions of Alaska. Here on Long Island we’re located in Zone 4, while much of the New York metropolitan area is in Zone 5.
